Mark Helyar

Mark Helyar is a Guernsey Advocate and holds an Of Counsel position at Bedell Cristin in Guernsey, Channel Islands, having formerly been its founding and managing partner between 2006 and 2016.

Mark is a Barrister of Grays Inn and a Notary Public and holds a number of degrees, having studied at universities in the UK and France (Caen University).   He specialises in the use of protected cell and incorporated cell companies for investment funds, reinsurance, insurance and ILS, for which he is recognised by international independent legal directories as a leading practitioner.  He has advised foreign governments in Europe, the Middle East and Asia and their regulatory authorities on the drafting, inception, regulation and use of segregated cell companies.  He was the Batonnier of the Guernsey Bar Council between 2012 and 2014.  During his career he and his team have won a number of nominations and international awards for novel ILS transactions, including the worlds first private listed CAT bond (Solidum) and the first ever Takaful securitisation structured as a Sharia compliant note (Salam III) and more recently life deal of the year 2016 (SQ Re Vita II, Trading Risk Awards).  Since stepping down as a partner in August 2016 Mark now focusses on strategic business development matters with clients and also sits as director of a number of Guernsey regulated insurers, reinsurers, investment funds and ILS issuers / transformers.  Mark helped to create the Bedell Trust operation in Mauritius and has been involved in structuring numerous cross-border transactions using Mauritian companies over many years.
