Legal system

The occupation of the island by the French and the British had a significant bearing on our legal system.

Thus, our law comprises both civil law and British common law practices.  Whilst, the Code de Commerce, the Civil Code and the Code Penal still form part of the laws of Mauritius,  the laws enacted after independence of Mauritius are statutes which have been passed in parliament.
